How experienced do I need to be?
2km/4km
This is an inclusive event aimed at giving all people the opportunity to swim outdoors in the stunning location of Roadford Lake. To take part in the 2km or 4km you need to be a competent swimmer and at least be able to swim 1-mile in a swimming pool (64 lengths) in under 45 minutes. However, please ensure that you get experience of swimming in open water, are confident in achieving the distance and are comfortable in your wetsuit prior to taking part.
8km
For those looking to swim two laps of the course (8km) you need to be able to swim the equivalent of 1-mile in a swimming pool (64 lengths) in under 40 minutes. We also recommend that you have swum at least 4km in open water prior to taking part this year.
Are there cut-off times for the different distances?
2km/4km
For the 2km and 4km, if you are making good progress and are not struggling, e.g. suffering from the cold, then we will accompany you to the finish, or move you along the course if necessary.
8km
To minimise time spent in the water we will only allow you to proceed on to the second loop if you have reached the feed station at the pontoon (after 4km) in approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes (depending on conditions). If you do not meet this cut-off time unfortunately you will not be allowed to continue. In this case no refunds will be given.
PLEASE NOTE: If conditions require and/or a swimmers progress is considered a problem for safety cover, the Race Director may change this on the day.
Can I swap my swim distance?
Yes, but only if you submit your request at least two weeks prior to the event.
If you choose to increase your distance you will have to pay the difference in entry fee. If you drop down in distance you will only receive a refund of the difference if you submit your request at least one month in advance.
Can I swim without a wetsuit?
Yes, you can apply to compete without a wetsuit or swim “skins”, please tick the appropriate box when entering to receive a non-wetsuit participant application form (the link will be sent with your confirmation email). You need to submit your form a minimum of 3 weeks before the event, which will provide us with enough information to assess your stated abilities, experience (both swim distance and water temperature) and current training to grant or refuse your application.
In the event that we refuse your application, you will be offered a full refund (if you wish) or you can swim with a wetsuit. If conditions are deemed to be extreme on the day, then we may prevent you taking part without a wetsuit. Under these circumstances you will be offered a full refund, unless you choose to compete with a wetsuit. For information, the water temperature is expected to be around 17C.
When will I receive my results?
You will receive a print out of results as you finish the race. Otherwise they will be available on line after race day.
What is the cancellation policy?
Entries are transferable between competitors up to 2 months before the event but must be confirmed with the Dartmoor Open Water Swim organisers (for insurance reasons). We understand the frustration of injuries and therefore if you become unable to take part in the event for any reason your entry fees may be credited for use on a future Twin Moors event within 1 year – as long as an event is taking place.
